伊利諾伊理工學院由阿芒技術學院(Armour Institute of Technology，成立于1940年)和劉易斯工學院(Lewis Institute，成立于1895年)合并而成。1930年代的經(jīng)濟大蕭條讓這兩所學院不得不想辦法應對學校積壓的大量債務。1939年阿芒與劉易斯決定合并：1940年在原阿芒技術學院的基礎上正式建立新的伊利諾伊理工學院，而原劉易斯工學院則出售給芝加哥市政府。二戰(zhàn)后，伊利諾伊理工學院發(fā)展十分迅猛，先后合并了三所芝加哥地區(qū)的學校：1949年合并設計學院(Institute of Design)，1969年合并芝加哥-肯特法學院(Chicago-Kent College of Law)、1986年合并中西部工程學院(Midwest College of Engineerin)。1969年建立了斯圖爾特商學院。
